Overview

What is a NAICS code?

The North American Industry Classification System (NAICS) is the standard used by US federal statistical agencies — including the Census Bureau, Bureau of Labor Statistics, and IRS — to classify business establishments by their primary economic activity. It was jointly developed by the statistical agencies of the United States, Canada, and Mexico, and first published in 1997 to replace the older Standard Industrial Classification — see the SIC code equivalent for the legacy system, the difference between NAICS and SIC for the side-by-side, or use our converter to convert NAICS to SIC. New to the system? What is a NAICS code? covers the full structure.

NAICS 2022 is the current revision, effective from January 1, 2022. It covers 20 broad economic sectors and uses a 2-to-6-digit hierarchical code structure: the more digits in a code, the more specific the classification. A company selling cloud software sits under a different 5-digit NAICS code than a company installing on-premise enterprise systems — even though both fall within the same 2-digit sector.

This NAICS code directory covers all 20 NAICS 2022 sectors down to the 5-digit industry level, with US business entity counts sourced from InfobelPRO's registry of 17.7 million classified US establishments. Use the search bar above to find a code by keyword, or browse the full hierarchy through the sector links above.

How NAICS Codes Are Structured

Each additional digit narrows the classification from a broad economic sector down to a specific industry. The first five digits are identical across the US, Canada, and Mexico; the sixth digit is country-specific.

Guide

How to find your NAICS code

  1. 1

    Describe your primary business activity

Think about what your establishment does to generate the most revenue. Ignore secondary activities — NAICS codes reflect the primary activity only. A trucking company that also stores goods should focus on transportation, not warehousing.

  2. 2

Search by keyword or partial code

Use the search bar at the top of this page. Type a keyword like "freight trucking", "software development", or "restaurant" — or enter a partial code like "5415" to see matching industries. Results are ranked by level: sectors appear first, then subsectors, then industry groups.

  3. 3

    Browse the hierarchy

Click a sector to see its subsectors, then drill into industry groups and individual 5-digit industries. Each level page shows entity counts and a description so you can confirm you're in the right classification branch.

  4. 4

    Match to the 5-digit industry

The 5-digit NAICS industry is the level most commonly required — for SAM.gov registration, B2B databases, and federal statistical reporting. Choose the code whose description most closely matches your primary activity.

  5. 5

Verify with the official NAICS manual

For formal registrations, cross-reference your selection with the US Census Bureau's official NAICS 2022 manual to confirm the definition and any includes/excludes notes for that code.

NAICS vs SIC: what's the difference?

SIC (Standard Industrial Classification)was created in 1937 and used by US federal agencies until NAICS replaced it in 1997. SIC organises the economy into just 11 major divisions using a fixed four-digit code — a structure that predates the rise of service industries and technology businesses. Many modern industries were forced into catch-all “not elsewhere classified” categories.

NAICS was purpose-built to solve those limitations. It expands to 20 sectors, introduces dedicated classifications for information technology, professional services, and healthcare, and shares a common 5-digit structure across the US, Canada, and Mexico. The SEC still classifies public companies by SIC code in EDGAR filings, so both systems remain in practical use.
